India runs one of the largest animal-identification exercises anywhere in the world. The 12-digit number on those polyurethane cattle ear tags — what farmers and field staff now call Pashu Aadhaar — anchors the Bharat Pashudhan database, the NADCP vaccination drives for FMD and brucellosis, and most state livestock-insurance schemes. What that number usually is not is machine-readable: it is printed or laser-marked, and read by a human squinting at a dusty ear in a crush.

That gap is where RFID cattle ear tags earn their place. Pashu Aadhaar: what it is, and what it is not

The national programme issues a unique 12-digit ID per animal, recorded against the owner in the Bharat Pashudhan / INAPH ecosystem with species, breed, sex, age, vaccination and, where captured, breeding events. It is an identity and record system, not a technology mandate. The physical carrier in the mass rollout has overwhelmingly been a low-cost visual tag — typically ₹8–20 — because across a national herd of roughly 30 crore cattle and buffalo, per-tag cost dominates everything else.

So when a farm asks for "RFID Pashu Aadhaar tags", what it wants is an electronic tag carrying the same national number, so one identity serves the government record, the herd software, the parlour and the insurance file. Achievable — but it must be planned at the ordering stage.

Why LF (ISO 11784/11785) still wins for individual animal reads

For pallets, files, garments and tools, UHF is the right answer — and most of this site says so. Animals, like library books, are one of the deliberate exceptions. The global animal-ID standard is low frequency at 134.2 kHz, set by ISO 11784 (code structure) and ISO 11785 (technical concept, covering FDX-B and HDX transponders). 1. You need one animal, not the whole pen

The requirement in a milking parlour, a treatment crush or a weigh-bridge is: which single animal is standing here right now. LF's short range — roughly 10–30 cm on a handheld wand, up to 60–80 cm with a race antenna — is not a weakness here; it is what makes the read unambiguous. A UHF tag reading at 2–4 m happily picks up the two animals queued behind, so in a crowded yard you get a list, not an identity. Power tuning and filtering logic can fight that, but you are engineering around the physics rather than with it.

2. Dung, mud, wet hide and monsoon

LF couples magnetically and is largely indifferent to water, mud and manure. UHF is a propagating wave that water absorbs — and an animal is mostly water. A UHF tag reading at 3 m on a clean bench reads far shorter against a wet hide, badly oriented and dung-caked, after a monsoon week in Kolhapur or Anand. LF does not degrade the same way.

3. Interoperability and certification

Any ISO 11784/11785 reader reads any conformant transponder, whatever the brand — which matters when a vet, an insurance surveyor, a co-operative and a state department all read the same animal. Ask suppliers for ISO 24631 conformance and performance certificates. Watch the acronym collision that trips up Indian buyers: here ICAR is the International Committee for Animal Recording, not the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. UHF has no equivalent animal-ID conformance regime.

Between the two ISO 11785 transponder types, FDX-B is cheaper and far more common while HDX costs more but offers better noise immunity and slightly longer range — worth paying for in a parlour full of motors. Buy readers that handle both.

Where UHF does belong on a livestock operation

UHF suits movement rather than identity: counting animals on and off a truck at a gate, feed and mineral-mixture stock, milk-can movement to the chilling centre, and farm equipment. Injectable glass transponders suit equines and pets but are a poor fit for food animals — migration and recovery-at-slaughter problems outweigh the retention benefit. Applicators run ₹800–2,500 and are not the place to economise: a worn or mismatched applicator is among the commonest causes of tag loss.

Tag retention is the number that decides your project

This is the honest heart of livestock RFID in India, and where most vendor decks go quiet. A tag that is not on the animal is worth nothing, and Indian conditions are hard on ear tags: thorny grazing, rope tethering, rubbing on steel feed barriers, monsoon fly strike and infection, 45°C-plus summers that embrittle cheap plastics, and — bluntly — deliberate removal before a resale or a duplicate claim.

Field reports from Indian tagging programmes commonly indicate annual ear-tag loss between the mid-single digits and the mid-teens in percentage terms, driven more by husbandry system than tag brand: stall-fed dairies at the low end, free-grazing and migratory herds at the high end. Linking the electronic tag to the national record

ISO 11784 defines a 15-digit code: a three-digit country or manufacturer code followed by a 12-digit national identification number. India's ISO country code is 356 and the national scheme is already 12 digits, so the two structures line up and one number can serve both the electronic read and the printed Pashu Aadhaar.

The catch is sequencing. You receive the 12-digit block from the department, and only then can tags be encoded and marked to match — an encoding run with a minimum order quantity and typically three to six weeks' lead time. Confirm country-code allocation and encoding practice with your tag supplier and the state animal husbandry department before a large order; do not assume a generic manufacturer-coded tag can be retro-fitted into the national numbering later.

Be realistic about integration: there is no open public write API into the national database for third-party farm software. Herd platforms keep their own animal master keyed to the 12-digit ID and reconcile with the departmental MIS via exports, structured CSV, or an integration agreed with the state or NDDB. Tag evidence for insurance and disease compensation

Livestock insurance in India has always been an identity problem before an actuarial one — the classic failure mode is one dead animal supporting several claims. That is why schemes hang off tagging, and why premium support under the National Livestock Mission is tied to a tagged, identified animal (the beneficiary's share is commonly around 15%, the balance shared between Centre and state; confirm the current year's guidelines, as the split is revised).

A claim file that settles quickly contains prompt intimation, the veterinary post-mortem report, the physical tag returned with the claim, photographs of the animal with the tag visible, and policy and ownership documents. Electronic ID strengthens each: a timestamped, geotagged handheld read at the time of loss, a vaccination history proving NADCP cover, and a yield record showing this was a productive animal. The honest limitation: an RFID read proves a tag was present, not that a particular animal was. Tag swapping is a real fraud vector and no radio technology closes it alone. Capture a muzzle-print photograph at tagging alongside the tag number — the muzzle pattern is individual and stable in adult animals — plus a geotagged photo with the tag in frame. Tag plus biometric plus vet attestation is a defensible file; tag alone is not.

Start with one shed or one village society, not the whole herd. Tag every animal in that unit, run a monthly readable-tag audit, and instrument exactly one workflow — usually parlour yield — before adding breeding and health modules. Prove the numbering reconciles with the departmental record on a small batch before an encoding run of thousands.
