Five Minutes: Alarm to Named Roll Call

A 184-person plant, an alarm, and the board filling up as people reach the assembly point — the tags, the reader at the muster point, the zones and presence window, and a straight answer on how to run it well.

Getting the most out of it: the board reads tags, so issuing tags at induction and collecting them on exit is what keeps the count matching your roster. It runs alongside your wardens and your emergency plan — turning a long roll call into a short one and handing the warden a named list to work from.

Why the Clipboard Roll Call Keeps Failing

The real competitor to an electronic mustering system is not another vendor — it is a printed roster, a T-card board and a warden shouting names into an open yard. Here is where that breaks.

A printed roster or a T-card board reflects who signed in this morning, not who is on site now. Late arrivals, contractors who left after lunch and anyone who moved between buildings all sit on the wrong side of the count.

A manual roll call is a person calling out names against wind, traffic and an alarm sounder, waiting for a shout back. It is slow, it is easy to mis-hear, and the bigger the site headcount the longer it takes.

The mustering products we are usually asked to replace are access control with a muster mode: everyone has to present a badge or a face to a reader at the assembly area. That builds a line of people at exactly the moment you want them dispersed, calm and counted.

Multi-gate sites end up with a sheet per muster point and a total added by hand. Somebody gets counted twice, somebody gets missed, and nobody can say which until the sheets are compared afterwards.

The Live Evacuation Board

The board is a browser dashboard that shows, per assembly point, who has arrived and who has not. The mechanism is deliberately simple — and we would rather explain it than dress it up.

A zone is a set of readers, not a polygon

A zone is simply the readers you assign to it, and whatever those readers hear is inside the zone. That keeps coverage to something a site survey can physically prove — and it means moving a reader moves the zone, with no floor plan to redraw.

Refreshes every three seconds

During a drill or a real event the board polls the live zone endpoint every three seconds. Somebody walking into reader coverage at the assembly point appears on the mustered list within seconds.

A 300-second presence window

At a muster point the presence window defaults to 300 seconds, so someone who steps a metre out of reader range stays firmly on the mustered list instead of sending a warden after a person standing right in front of them. The window is yours to tune per zone: five minutes suits an open assembly area, and a shorter window suits a tightly-covered one.

Occupancy against capacity, per zone

Each zone carries a capacity figure that drives an occupancy bar. On a multi-point site the incident controller can see at a glance which assembly area is filling up and which one is still nearly empty.

The roster is every tag row marked as Personnel. Subtract the people the muster readers can currently hear and you have the not-yet-arrived list — the names to go and look for.

What the Warden Actually Sees

One screen, one status, one list that shrinks. Everything on it is either a live reading or an export you can hand to your own safety file.

A login scoped to the muster board only

Per-user modules mean a fire warden’s account can open onto the evacuation board and nothing else — no asset registers, no personnel records, no other part of the system. It answers the standard objection about giving thirty wardens a system login.

The board runs in a browser — on a control-room screen, a laptop at the gate or a tablet carried to the assembly point. To be clear: there is no native warden app, and we will not pretend otherwise.

As people reach the muster point the list of unaccounted names shortens on its own, so wardens know which names to chase first — and every warden is reading the same list at the same moment. It gives the sweep your procedure calls for a running head start.

An all-clear state

When everyone is accounted for, the controller sets the board to all-clear so every warden and every screen shows the same status. It gives every screen the same status at the same time — alongside, not instead of, the radio or verbal all-clear your procedure requires.

Contractors count, if they carry a tag

Anyone with a tag row marked as Personnel is on the roster, so long-term contractors are in scope from the day they are issued a tag. It is not a walk-up visitor system: no tag, no place on the roll call.

Two design decisions do most of the work: a zone is defined by which readers belong to it, and a presence window stops brief drop-outs from reading as missing people.

What Goes In at the Muster Point

Active 2.4 GHz readers at the assembly points and choke points, one tag per person, one tag per piece of equipment you also want accounted for. Honest specifications, including the ones that constrain where things can go.

Four antennas in a single enclosure — omni and directional, 12 dBi dual-polarised — with TCP/IP and 4G backhaul, IP65 sealing and a −20 to +60 °C operating range. Mounted at gates, muster points and choke points.

Range is a survey output, not a datasheet line

We quote up to 100 m typical and 400 m line-of-sight, and we confirm the real figure on your site before committing to reader counts. Steel, concrete, antenna choice and mounting height all move that number, which is why we quote after walking your site rather than off a spec sheet.

T505 personnel card tag

Beacons every 500 ms, three-year battery, IP67, 86 × 54 × 4.5 mm. It is a 4.5 mm tapered clamshell with a moulded slot — not a credit-card-thickness card, so check it against any holders you already issue and plan on lanyards.

AT507 puck tag

Beacons once a second, three-year battery, IP67, rated −20 to +45 °C, fixed with screw eyelets or a 3M VHB pad. Its home is equipment, vehicles and fixed assets — and for any personnel mounting we confirm on the site survey that the chosen spot stays inside that temperature range.

Batteries on a schedule, not an alert

Both tags are specified at three years and are replaced on a planned cycle you run yourself. A scheduled swap at induction or annual shutdown keeps the whole fleet fresh and predictable.

Backhaul built for real plants

Wired TCP/IP where there is cabling and 4G where a trench would be needed, so an assembly point at the far end of the yard goes live either way. The application can be hosted on your own server or a private VPS.

We walk the site, place readers at gates, assembly points and choke points, and measure what those readers actually hear in your yard. The reader count comes out of the survey; the tag count comes out of your headcount.

The software platform is built and supported by Identium in India, and it can be deployed on infrastructure you control rather than a vendor cloud — we confirm the hosting and data-flow arrangement in writing during the survey. That matters on plants where a cloud-and-GSM-only architecture is a non-starter.

Admin blocks, workshops, warehouses, gates, car parks and assembly points outside any classified envelope. Areas with an explosive-atmosphere classification need certified equipment from a hazardous-area specialist — that is not us, and we will say so up front.

What is an RFID mustering system?

An RFID mustering system is an electronic roll call for emergency evacuations. Personnel carry an RFID tag; readers at the assembly point detect those tags and a live board shows who has mustered and who has not yet arrived. It replaces a printed roster or T-card board with a screen everyone reads from, and an exportable roll call afterwards.

How does hands-free mustering work without a badge tap?

The personnel tag is an active 2.4 GHz beacon that transmits on its own — the T505 card every 500 ms, the AT507 puck once a second. Readers covering the muster point hear those beacons as people walk in, so nobody queues to tap a badge or scan a card. The board picks up arrivals within seconds.

How does RFID mustering work with the fire alarm system?
